In finance, the Non-farm payroll is a measure of the number of paid workers in the United States, excluding workers in the farming industry.

Economists and market analysts watch this number closely when it is out by the Bureau of Labor Statistics(BLS) on a monthly basis. The non-farm payroll number is used as a gauge of the health of an economy.

A rising number indicates that more people are employed and that the economy is growing. A falling number indicates that fewer people are employed and that the economy is contracting.
